Computer Security

laptopsecure.gif Computer security includes both physical security and digital security. While physical security protects against theft of the computer equipment, inadequate digital security can lead to your computer getting infected with malware and hijacked by hackers, which can potentially lead to identity theft.

Physical Security

Computers, especially laptops, are one of the most expensive items that will be in a student's room, and carelessness can lead to it being stolen. However, there are ways to prevent computer theft.

In a room, it is suggested that a computer be locked down with a cable lock, such as those available by Kensington. This is one of the more well-known manufacturers; there are others such as Belkin and Targus.

Also, but remembering that your laptop is a device that others would want to take, accidental theft can also be deterred. If you are in the library or Union, leaving your laptop even for a minute, while you go get a drink at the water fountain for example, could lead to someone simply walking away with it.

Operating System Updates

When vulnerabilities for computers are found, updates are typically issued by the company that produces the software. Many security threats are the result of vulnerabilities in the computer's operating system. While some software can protect against unknown threats, sometimes the vulnerabilities make it impossible to be detected. This is why it is important to make sure your computer is up to date.

Firewall

The term firewall is based upon the use of a controlled wall of fire to prevent the spread of a wild fire. In computing, a firewall prevents network and Internet traffic from entering or leaving a computer unless it has permission to do so.

Protective and Removal Software

There are many programs that can be used to protect your computer from malware threats. See our Malware Protection and Removal page for a list of suggested software.
