IP Address

The term Internet Protocol (IP) address is a misnomer, as is designates a device connected to a network and not necessarily the Internet. An IP address (currently) is 4 numbers of the numbers 0 through 255, separated by periods, such as 129.1.2.2, 192.168.1.4, 10.11.234.3, or 169.245.13.45. On the BGSU network, these IP addresses mean different things:

  • 129.1.x.x IP Address - the computer or device is registered on the network and has a connection.
  • 10.11.x.x IP Address - the computer or device is detected by the BGSU network but needs to be registered.
  • 192.168.x.x IP Address - the computer or device is connecting to a non-BGSU network, which may be caused by a router being setup in the residence hall.
  • 169.x.x.x IP Address - the computer is not detecting the BGSU network.

IPv?

There are two types of IP versions: IPv4 and IPv6.

IPv4

Currently, IP addresses use the IPv4 standard, which gives the ranges of 0.0.0.0 through 255.255.255.255 for IP address. See http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/IPv4 for more technical information.

IPv6

An up-and-coming standard for IP addresses is IPv6. If your computer is using IPv6, your IP address may look like the following: 2011:04f0:00e0:c328:40be:25de:0600:cade

The BGSU network does not currently support the use of IPv6. See http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/IPv6 for more technical information.
