Position Summary
The Probationary Computer Consultant (PCC) position is responsible for training to become a Computer Consultant. They will complete the Computer Consultant training program within 60 hours or 3 weeks (whichever comes first). Along with Computer Consultants, Probationary Computer Consultants are responsible for maintaining Residential Computing Connection’s residential computing locations, working shifts from RCC Central (which includes answering client phone calls and emails as well as remedying lab issues as needed), and supporting network connections and virus troubleshooting for on-campus student owned computers. Probationary Computer Consultants will assist in the maintenance of any technical equipment and resources offered by Residential Computing Connection.
Persons in the position of Probationary Computer Consultant will be expected to travel to and work in several locations throughout campus, including the Residential Computing Connection office, BGSU-sponsored apartments, residence halls and small group living units both on and off campus.
While working in the Probationary Computer Consultant position, a person will commonly work as an individual, however situations may require a Probationary Computer Consultant to work as a member of a small group. Probationary Computer Consultants will work closely with other Computer Consultants and their Area Coordinators to complete the Probationary training program. All Probationary Computer Consultants are expected to work as a team, participate in weekly meetings and perform other duties as assigned. The Computer Consultant position reports directly to the ResNet Coordinator, The Area Coordinator of Helpdesk, and the Area Coordinator of Labs.
Qualifications
A qualified candidate for any position within Residential Computing Connection must meet minimum qualifications for eligible employment outlined in the "ENROLLMENT REQUIREMENTS AND RESTRICTIONS OF STUDENT EMPLOYMENT" section of the Employer Handbook.
All candidates must have and demonstrate excellent customer service skills, written and oral communication skills. All positions will be required to lift objects such as computers, printers and tables and will need to traverse campus on a daily basis.
While not required, Residential Computing Connection will take into account any certifications, courses, technical troubleshooting and/or previous job experience when determining who will be hired as Computer Consultant.
At the end of a Probationary Computer Consultants training program, the employee will complete two shifts under his or her respective Area Coordinator to become a Computer Consultant. If an employee is unable to complete the training in the time specified or does not pass their evaluation from his or her supervisors, their employment will be terminated. Probationary Computer Consultants who successfully complete training will be re-hired as a full RCC Consultant and receive an increased pay rate.
Schedule
- Average of 10 hours per week; including 4 flexible work hours. Hours will be spent shadowing with other Computer Consultants and Area Coordinators.
- Mandatory training sessions taking place one week before the BGSU fall semester and two days before the BGSU spring semester
- One meeting per week with supervisors is required. The meeting is 30 minutes long, and occurs in a group format. Meetings are scheduled for Friday afternoons, at 4:30 PM
- Employees may be required to work during finals week
Pay Rate
$7.00 / hour
