Getting Updates Manually

To get updates for Windows XP without using Automatic Updates, do the following:
  1. Open Internet Explorer.
  2. From the Tools menu, select Windows Updates. This will take you to the Microsoft Windows Update site.

Another way to get updates is to do the following:

  1. Open the Start menu.
  2. Select All Programs.
  3. At the top of the left-most column you will see an item titled Windows Update. Select it.

You will now be directed to the update site for Windows. If you need to see a larger image of the sample screen, click on it for a larger view.

  1. In order to begin using the Microsoft Update service, you must select Microsoft Update from the menu in the Windows Update screen as shown below.

  2. You'll be directed to a page like the one shown below. After reading through the information, click the button labeled Start Now.

  3. Review the short agreement listed on the next page and then click Continue.

  4. After clicking continue, you may get a pop-up about the information bar. Read the pop-up, click OK, and follow the directions on the page.

  5. Internet Explorer will pop-up a security warning. You'll just need to click Install.

  6. You'll be presented with the final screen of the process, from where you can check for updates. The instructions for checking for updates can be found on the Windows Updates page.
